CPUs Wasting Our Money Thanks to Proprietary Extensions

Agner Fog, an expert in software optimization is making a plea for open/standarized x86 extensions.

Intel/AMD stick with proprietary ones because they feel that they get a competitive edge. Really? Who has bought a Core i7 due to the SSE 4.2 instructions? CPUs are consume extra energy and underperform as decoders/execution units are too complicated
